Plastering the walls is an important operation before wallpapering. Only after leveling the walls can modern wallpaper be glued with high quality. How to putty walls and what you need for this we read in this article ...

Indoor renovation

When repairing walls, a finishing putty is used.

Finishing putty is the leveling of walls before painting or pasting with finishing materials.

It is easier to stick any kind of wallpaper on the plastered walls. After the putty, the wall becomes smooth and has a solid white color, which is sometimes a necessary rule for gluing wallpaper, for example, very thin, through which dark concrete can show through in places.

Sometimes in the passports attached to the wallpaper, there is a wish that, before pasting, it is advisable to paint the walls to match the wallpaper. Such a wish is made for the convenience of gluing, since minor discrepancies at the joints, on the wall painted to match the wallpaper, will be much less noticeable.

Stages of wall repair

Primer

Before applying the putty, it is necessary to prime the wall. During wall repairs, priming can be done several times.

We prime the walls with a roller (it is advisable to use an impregnating or strengthening soil). Now you can start puttingty.

Putty can consist of several stages; for normal leveling on the walls, it is desirable to apply at least two layers of putty. You can apply 1 to 4 mm of putty at a time.

Preparation of putty

The dry mixture is poured into a bucket with a measured volume of water, and stirred with a hand-held electric mixer.

The mortar for the putty is prepared according to the proportion specified in the manufacturer's instructions.

Before use, you can check the solution by scooping up a little putty from the bucket with a spatula, it should not drain from the spatula and be thick enough but not dry.

Putty or leveling the walls

Puttying is the most important point in the repair of walls and ceilings, how carefully this operation is carried out depends on how the wallpaper or paint will lie on the surface.

The putty is applied to the wall with a wide trowel, in a circular motion. The spatula is held at an angle of 300 - 400 to the wall.

After applying the first layer, it is necessary to dry it, drying takes from 6 to 24 hours, depending on the temperature and humidity in the room.

After drying the first layer, the next one is applied. Repair of walls in difficult and hard-to-reach places, between heating pipes, near radiators, etc. will not do without a rubber spatula.

When laying the finishing layer of putty, you need to be more careful and not leave traces from the spatula and other objects. The smoother you putty the wall, the less you will have to churn out in the future.

Sanding when repairing walls

Wall repairs won't do without dust. Therefore, be sure to use breathing protection.

To sand the wall, you will need a special block with sandpaper holders, sandpaper and a respirator.

If you grind the walls under wallpaper, you can take coarser sandpaper, this will not affect the quality in any way, but it will save you time and effort, but if you plan to paint the walls, you need smaller sandpaper, otherwise the risks from sandpaper will be visible even under the paint ...

It is better to start sanding the wall from the top from the corner, in circular motions, applying the same pressure and gradually moving to the bottom, sanding so that there are no visible defects, we pay special attention to the corners.

When repairing walls, to improve the visibility of filling defects, you can use a lamp or a halogen spotlight.

The luminaire must be positioned so that the luminous flux is directed along the wall.
If necessary, additional leveling, you can apply a finishing layer, locally, only in the place where it is required, letting it dry, and then sanding it on a block.

At the end of the sanding process, the walls are primed again.

Then you can glue the wallpaper.

Repairing walls for painting implies a more thorough puttying, with the possibility of applying a finishing layer of finely dispersed putties, thanks to a putty with a fine fraction, you can achieve a better result and a smoother surface.
